True, but agreeing upon what is “necessary” and what is “small” underscores our problem. To a libertarian purist, no size of government is too small. To a totalitarian, any size of government is necessary. As long as this debate is dominated by subjective opinion, the question of the appropriate size of government can never be objectively resolved.

I agree. Though most people would agree on some middle way between libertarianism and totalitarianism.
