Scientists have created genetic modified plants with a more efficient photosynthesis. On average plants only use about 4% of the energy of light. By increasing the efficiency of photosynthesis we can obtain higher yields of crops.
This research is of great importance for space settlements, both orbital ones as for, say, settlements on Mars. Since Mars receives less energy from the Sun per square meter than Earth, one needs a larger area to produce the same amount of food as on Earth.
And in case of orbital settlements we have to deal with limited space available for agriculture. More efficient crops will be solution in establishing food security for space settlers as a higher yield means less space will be required.
