Our regular reader will know that we are quite hawkish when it comes to air quality and public health. One of the measure we have proposed is for space habitats to ban the use of internal combustion engines. A study by researchers from Cornell University provides a solid scientific base for a complete ban on internal combustion engines.
According to this study replacing thirty-five percent of all gasoline powered cars in the Houston area will improve air quality by fifty percent by the year 2040. Combined with the steady progress in electric vehicles, there is really no reason why orbital space settlements should even consider to legalize internal combustion engines.
Here is yet another study that confirms that the adoption of electric vehicles will have a positive effect on air quality.
