Water is indispensable for human life and hence the presence of water is of critical importance for any Moon-based settlement. Contrary to previous scientific understanding, there appears more water on the Moon. However, this water is primarily contained as hydroxy into lunar stones.
Cosmic radiation is one of the most serious dangers to human spaceflight and hence a serious issue for space colonization. Consequently radiation protection is no luxury for space settlers and without this space colonization is unlikely to succeed.
Researchers at the Australian National University have developed a new nano material that could reflect cosmic radiation. A thin film of the material could provide radiation protection of astronauts and space settlers. Compared to other shielding techniques this material appears to offer a light-weight protection.
According to Polish scientists radiation in space is much less hostile than had been expected. This research of great importance for future space settlements, as cosmic radiation is a major hazard for space travelers.
However, we can make a small point of critique: the research was conducted at the ISS, which well inside the Earth’s magneto-sphere. Our magnetic field protect our planet against space radiation.
